Big Five Software, also known as Big 5 Software, was an American video game developer and publisher founded in 1980 by Bill Hogue and Jeff Konyu. The company primarily developed games for the Tandy TRS-80 in its early years and later for the Atari 8-bit family. Most of their TRS-80 games were clones of popular arcade games, including titles like "Galaxy Invasion" (a clone of "Galaxian"), "Super Nova" (based on "Asteroids"), Defense Command (similar to "Missile Command"), and "Meteor Mission II" (reminiscent of "Lunar Rescue").
One of their notable games from 1981 for the TRS-80 was "Robot Attack," a clone of the arcade game "Berzerk." This game was significant as it was the first game from Big Five to include speech. The voice lines in "Robot Attack" were recorded on tape and digitized through the TRS-80 cassette port.
Big Five Software's most significant release came with the transition to the Atari 8-bit family, notably with the platform game "Miner 2049er."
Designed and programmed by Bill Hogue, "Miner 2049er" was a commercial and critical success, receiving accolades such as "Electronic Game of the Year" in the 1984 Arkie Awards. The game was notable for its use of a custom 16-kilobyte ROM cartridge, which was a step up from the standard 8 KB cartridges used for Atari 8-bit games at the time. "Miner 2049er" was ported to several other computers and consoles. Following "Miner 2049er," Big Five also published a sequel, "Bounty Bob Strikes Back!" in 1985.
Despite the success of these titles, Big Five Software wound down its operations after the release of "Bounty Bob Strikes Back!" In 2001, Bill Hogue released a free custom emulation of the Atari 8-bit versions of "Miner 2049er" and "Bounty Bob Strikes Back!" for Microsoft Windows.
